Discover Zum Höllbräukeller

If you ever find yourself wandering through the historic streets of Eichstätt, make your way to Zum Höllbräukeller at Pedettistraße 38, 85072 Eichstätt, Germany. Tucked slightly above the town center, this Bavarian diner-style restaurant feels like a local secret, yet it’s well known among residents and returning visitors. I first visited on a cool autumn evening after a long walk along the Altmühl River, and the warm glow from inside was impossible to resist.

The building itself reflects traditional Bavarian architecture-solid wood interiors, sturdy tables, and that unmistakable beer hall atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where conversations flow easily and the scent of roasted meats and freshly poured beer fills the air. According to the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA), regional authenticity is one of the main factors influencing dining satisfaction in Bavaria. You can see why here. The setting feels genuine, not staged for tourists.

The menu leans heavily into Franconian and Bavarian classics. Think crispy Schweinshaxe with crackling skin, tender Sauerbraten simmered for hours, and golden Schnitzel served with potato salad or fries. During my visit, I ordered the roast pork with dumplings and dark beer gravy. The meat was slow-cooked, likely at a low temperature for several hours to preserve moisture-a method culinary institutes often recommend for tougher cuts to ensure tenderness. The result was melt-in-your-mouth texture paired with rich, balanced flavors. Portions are generous, which is typical for traditional German diners, but the presentation remains neat and thoughtful.

Beer lovers will appreciate the connection to Bavarian brewing culture. The restaurant proudly serves regional brews, honoring the Reinheitsgebot, Germany’s historic beer purity law established in 1516. That commitment to quality ingredients-water, barley, hops, and yeast-still influences brewing standards today. I opted for a dark lager that complemented the savory dishes beautifully, its malty depth enhancing the roasted notes of the pork.

Reviews from locals consistently highlight the friendly service. On my second visit, I noticed how staff handled a full house with calm efficiency. Orders were taken promptly, dishes arrived hot, and questions about ingredients were answered confidently. In an age when diners increasingly care about sourcing and preparation, transparency matters. The team here seems genuinely knowledgeable about what they serve. That builds trust.

Another detail worth mentioning is the terrace. During warmer months, outdoor seating offers a relaxed view over Eichstätt’s charming rooftops. It’s an ideal location for long lunches or casual dinners with friends. Families are welcome, and I’ve seen large groups celebrating birthdays without feeling cramped. The layout supports both intimate meals and lively gatherings.

From a pricing perspective, the value aligns with regional standards. Bavaria is known for hearty cuisine at reasonable cost, and this spot follows suit. While it may not be a fine-dining establishment, it doesn’t aim to be. Instead, it excels at what it promises: comforting, authentic food in a welcoming environment. According to a 2023 European dining trends report by Statista, comfort food and regional specialties continue to dominate consumer preferences across Germany. Places like this thrive because they stay true to culinary roots rather than chasing trends.

Of course, no restaurant is perfect. On particularly busy weekends, you might experience a short wait, especially without a reservation. Parking nearby can also be limited due to the central location. Still, these minor inconveniences hardly overshadow the overall experience.

In a town rich with history, from baroque architecture to university life, this restaurant holds its own as a culinary landmark. Whether you’re exploring Eichstätt for the first time or returning for another visit, the combination of hearty Bavarian dishes, well-poured beer, and relaxed hospitality makes it a dependable choice. It’s the kind of place where you settle in, raise a glass, and understand exactly why traditional German dining continues to endure.

  • The best restaurant I've ever been to. The steaks are gorgeous

  • As a foreigner, I was truly impressed by the chef's modern take on regional cuisine. They managed to elevate traditional dishes with innovative twists while preserving the authentic flavors. The result was a dining experience that surpassed my expectations. I enjoyed my food and I was pleasantly surprised by the vegetarian main course from my friend too. It was a delightful surprise.

  • The atmosphere is easeful and relaxed. One is surrounded by cozy wood and a refreshing modern take on Bavarian “Gemütlichkeit”. Höllbräukeller’s service staff is attentive. The cook is a friendly, down-to-earth man, who visits every table to greet the guests and shows a lot of love for his craft. This translates into his food: it is flat out stunning. I have roamed the world, eaten diverse exquisite cuisine and indulged in a fair amount of Michelin star food. This kitchen however in the unlikely spot of a small town in the midst of Bavaria blew my mind. Its spirited cook might not have a star but most certainly deserves one in my humble opinion. My spouse ate Käsespätzle, which were top notch. The cheese used was the right balance between piquant and creamy, the spätzle were clearly house-made (geschabt). They beat the ones I had in an organic food based Hüttn on a hike up the Ochsenkopf mountain – which is said something bc those people know(!) how to make a good “Kasspatzn”. The salad on the side was made with love and a refreshing addition to this heavier main course. I had chicken with a godly pumpkin and potato mash – very recommendable and a delicious sour cream. For desert we had the best Kaiserschnarrn I have ever tasted. The cook was attentive enough to ask beforehand for any allergies and made sure to not add walnuts as I am a nut allergic. The Kaiserscharrn was crispy, full-bodied – not too airy and had the right amount of sweetness. One could taste that all the condiments were self made. They consisted of Vanilla ice cream with Tonka bean, finely seasoned apple and quince puree. I will stop off at “Höllbräukeller” merely for this amazing Kaiserschmarrn. Be sure to check out the other main courses as well. I recommend the house-made mint lemonade.

  • We got there at 22:41 when they were already closing and they accepted with a big smile to serve us what we wanted
